Apparently today is National Macaroon Day. Happy National Macaroon Day! I felt like making something different, so I didn’t make macaroons this time — but if you are in the mood, here are a few of my favorite macaroon recipes and notes.
I’m referring to the large, chewy-style macaroons rather than the delicate French sandwich cookies. I’ve never tried the classic French macaroon myself, though I’ve seen them at bakeries. They look beautiful, and they’re on my list to try someday.
These chewy versions are the ones I’ve made and enjoyed:
Cooking Light’s Chewy Chocolate Macaroons — These are rich and satisfying without feeling like a diet dessert. I usually use regular sweetened condensed milk instead of fat-free or reduced-fat, which makes them especially indulgent. Thinking about them is enough to put me in a macaroon mood.
Ina Garten’s Macaroons — Another simple, reliable recipe that produces delicious, chewy macaroons with minimal fuss.
If you want to attempt the more refined version, try the Parisian-style macaroons. I haven’t tackled them yet, but Martha Stewart’s Parisian Macaroons has at least one positive review and could be a good starting point for anyone ready for a baking challenge.
Whether you choose the chewy coconut-style or the delicate sandwich cookies, macaroons are a delightful treat worth celebrating. If you try any of these recipes, enjoy the baking — and happy National Macaroon Day!
