How to Make Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Dip

  1. Soften the cream cheese:
    • Leave an 8-ounce package of cream cheese at room temperature for about an hour, or cut it into pieces and microwave in a microwave-safe bowl for about 30 seconds to soften.
  2. Beat the cream cheese:
    • Beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
  3. Add brown sugar:
    • Mix in 1/2 to 3/4 cup brown sugar (adjust to taste) until fully incorporated.
  4. Add sour cream, vanilla, and lemon juice:
    • Stir in 1 cup sour cream, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and 2 teaspoons lemon juice until combined.
  5. Add milk and instant pudding:
    • Pour in 1 cup milk and a 3-ounce package of instant vanilla pudding mix. Mix on low, scrape the bowl, then increase speed and beat until smooth and fluffy.
  6. Chill the dip:
    • Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. The dip firms up as it chills; serve at room temperature if you prefer a thinner consistency.

Tip:

  • The dip becomes quite thick when chilled—almost mousse-like. For a thinner texture, serve at room temperature or add an extra 1/2 to 1 cup of milk while mixing.

Apples with Caramel Dip

My family loves this creamy caramel dip. When I make it I usually slice plenty of apples because it disappears quickly. The dip pairs beautifully with crisp apples — it’s rich and dessert-like, and I often find myself spooning it onto slices liberally.

Whether you eat the apples for the dip or the dip for the apples, they complement each other perfectly. This recipe is a crowd-pleaser at gatherings and makes a simple, satisfying treat any time of year.

Precutting Apples

Sliced apples will brown if prepared too far in advance. They still taste fine, but appearance suffers. Fortunately, several easy methods prevent browning.

My usual approach is to soak slices in water with a couple tablespoons of lemon juice, then drain and pat dry on a dish towel for a few minutes. Salt water also works, and some people use soda like Sprite for a slightly different flavor.

Apples and Family Tradition

I keep apples in the refrigerator year-round—they’re a favorite in our household. My father always started his day with an apple, and that habit left a lasting impression. Simple rituals like that make apples an enduring, healthy snack that pairs perfectly with this dip.

Brown Sugar Caramel — Where’s the Caramel?

Some ask, “Where’s the caramel?” The rich, caramel-like flavor in this Amish-inspired dip comes from brown sugar and the creamy base, so no separate caramel sauce is needed. The result is a sweet, buttery flavor that evokes caramel without extra steps.

Serve this creamy dip with crisp apple slices at parties, fall gatherings, potlucks, or whenever you want a comforting treat. It’s a favorite during autumn but delicious any time of year.

Ingredients

  • 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened
  • ½ – ¾ c. brown sugar (depending on how sweet you prefer)
  • 1 c. sour cream
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 (3 oz. pkg.) instant vanilla pudding mix

Instructions

  • Beat the softened cream cheese until creamy. Add the brown sugar and beat until smooth.
  • Add the sour cream, vanilla, and lemon juice. Mix until smooth.
  • Add the milk and instant pudding mix. Mix on low, scrape the sides, then increase speed and beat until creamy and combined.
  • Cover and chill until ready to serve.
  • Serve with sliced apples or other fruit.
  • Store refrigerated for up to a week.

Notes

This dip sets up quite thick—almost like mousse—which many people prefer because it clings to apple slices. If you want a thinner dip, serve it at room temperature or add another 1/2 to 1 cup milk while mixing.

You can also use heavy whipping cream instead of the milk and instant pudding. Omit the sour cream, milk, and pudding, then add 1–2 cups heavy cream and whip until thick for a lighter, airy texture.

Yields about 3 1/2 cups of dip.
