Give classic deviled eggs a delicious upgrade with these creamy French Onion Dip Deviled Eggs. Loaded with sweet, caramelized onions, they make a crowd-pleasing appetizer that disappears fast.

It’s hard to believe it’s already mid-May — the days are warmer, the drive-in is open, and summer gatherings are starting to pop up. For many people, summer brings vacations and pool days; for me, it means picnic food and outdoor potlucks. Deviled eggs are one of my all-time favorites for gatherings. If I spot a tray of them, I can’t resist piling a few (or several) on my plate.
I used to avoid making deviled eggs at home because I didn’t feel confident about hard-boiling eggs: sometimes they didn’t peel well, and other times the yolks were overcooked. After some practice, I finally nailed the method and now make hard-boiled eggs with confidence. Once I could reliably make eggs, the fun part was deciding on a filling. Traditional is always good, but I love putting a small twist on classic recipes.
Onions are a constant in my kitchen — I add them to more dishes than almost anything else. French onion dip is one of my nostalgic favorites; growing up it was my go-to chip dip. That creamy, savory onion flavor inspired me to combine the idea of French onion dip with deviled egg filling. The result is these French Onion Dip Deviled Eggs: creamy, slightly tangy, and full of caramelized onion flavor.

What makes French onion dip so irresistible is the caramelized onions. I often make a little extra just from tasting while I cook — a reliable method for improving any recipe is to taste as you go. For these deviled eggs I replaced some of the mayonnaise with sour cream to capture the classic dip’s tangy creaminess, and I added a touch of Worcestershire sauce for depth (optional if you want to keep the recipe vegetarian).

I used Vidalia onions, a sweet variety that pairs beautifully with eggs and creamy components. Vidalias are in season in spring and summer, making this recipe perfect for warm-weather gatherings. Even if Vidalias aren’t available, any sweet onion or yellow onion caramelized slowly will produce excellent results.

These deviled eggs pair well with classic picnic sides like pasta salad and potato salad, but they’re equally welcome on a holiday appetizer table or as part of a brunch spread. They store well in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days, making them a convenient make-ahead option when planning a party.

Ingredients
- 6 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup diced Vidalia onion (or any sweet onion)
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional; omit to keep vegetarian)
- Chopped chives, for garnish
Instructions
- Place eggs in a large saucepan and cover with 1–2 inches of cold water. Bring to a full rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, turn off the heat, leave the pan on the hot burner, cover, and let sit for 10 minutes. Remove the eggs and run under cold water until cool. Peel when cool enough to handle.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes or until the onions are deeply browned and caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Slice the eggs in half lengthwise and transfer the yolks to a bowl. Add sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, and Worcestershire sauce if using. Mash or beat the mixture until very smooth. Fold in the caramelized onions, reserving a small amount for garnish if desired.
- Pipe or spoon the filling into each egg white half. Sprinkle with chopped chives and a few reserved onion pieces. Chill until ready to serve. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
