Air Fried Chicken Tenders are crispy and perfectly cooked in about 20 minutes, making them an ideal quick weeknight dinner. The method is simple enough that kids can help with preparation.

If you haven’t tried an air fryer yet, now is a great time. Air fryers have become very popular for good reason: they produce crispy results with little oil and cook much faster than a conventional oven.

Air fryers are easy to use and versatile; you can make a wide variety of dishes from chicken tenders to snacks and vegetables. Larger-capacity models are convenient for families because they reduce the number of batches you need to cook, while smaller units are great for one or two servings.

What is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer is a countertop appliance that cooks by circulating hot air around the food, a process called convection heating. This allows you to achieve crispy, “fried” textures without submerging food in oil.

You don’t always need breading to get great results in an air fryer. For example, seasoned, unbreaded chicken tenders will come out similar to grilled chicken if you use a dry rub and cook them at the right temperature.

One of the biggest advantages of air frying is that you need far less oil to get crispy results—sometimes just a light spritz. Another advantage is speed: many recipes take roughly half the time compared to an oven, which is a big help on busy evenings.

Ingredients for Air Fried Chicken Tenders

Chicken tenders – this recipe uses fresh tenders. If you use frozen tenders, thaw them first so the coating adheres properly.

Breadcrumbs – a mix of regular breadcrumbs and Panko yields the best crunch, but you can use all Panko or all regular breadcrumbs if you prefer.

Eggs – beaten eggs help the coating stick and create an extra-crispy layer.

Flour – use all-purpose flour for dredging.

Seasonings – garlic powder, seasoned salt, and black pepper add simple, tasty flavor.

Do I Need to Spray My Air Fryer Basket?

Do not use traditional aerosol non-stick sprays directly on the air fryer basket, as they can damage the non-stick finish over time. Instead, use a refillable oil mister with a light coating of oil when needed; it prevents sticking and helps the coating crisp up.

How To Make Air Fryer Chicken Strips

Step 1 – Rinse the chicken if desired, trim any excess fat, and pat dry.

Step 2 – Set up a dredging station with three shallow bowls: flour, beaten eggs, and the breadcrumb mixture. One at a time, coat each tender in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs, pressing gently so the coating adheres.

Step 3 – Place a few coated tenders in the air fryer basket, leaving space for air to circulate between pieces. Lightly spritz them with oil from a mister.

Step 4 – Cook at about 370°F (188°C) for 8–10 minutes, flipping and spraying once at the halfway point. Tenders are done when golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).

Can You Stack Chicken in the Air Fryer?

No. Do not overfill or stack the basket. Air fryers rely on circulating hot air, so overcrowding will lead to uneven cooking and longer cook times. Leave enough space around each piece for airflow.

Do You Need To Flip the Chicken?

Yes. Flip the tenders about halfway through the cook time to ensure even browning. Use silicone-covered tongs or a non-scratch tool to avoid damaging the basket’s coating.

Can You Put Aluminum Foil in an Air Fryer?

Many models allow small pieces of foil when used correctly, but always check your air fryer manual first. Follow these general tips:

  • Don’t cover the entire basket with foil; it will block air circulation and cause uneven cooking. Use small sheets where needed.
  • Place foil under food only when the basket is ready; loose foil can catch the fan or heating element and may become a fire hazard.
  • Use foil to line a drip pan or catch grease for easier cleanup, but keep ventilation in mind.

Always consult your owner’s manual for model-specific guidance.

Tips for Making Chicken Tenders in the Air Fryer

  • For a different crunchy texture, substitute finely crushed crackers for breadcrumbs.
  • Use air fryer parchment liners with holes to reduce cleanup, but be sure they fit your basket and never place them in the fryer during preheating.
  • Protect countertops by placing the air fryer on a silicone mat or heat-resistant cutting board while in use.
