Nutella Wontons

We’re big hazelnut lovers here and Nutella is a go-to. These warm, chocolatey wontons combine a crisp shell with gooey filling and make an easy dessert or special snack.

When we served these to friends, they disappeared fast — next time we doubled the batch. They’re so tempting you’ll likely sneak a few while preparing them.

These can also work as a sweet appetizer. Pairing a couple of sweet bites with savory appetizers adds a nice balance. A simple raspberry jam dip complements the Nutella beautifully.

Serve them warm. To reheat, place the wontons on a cookie sheet in a 200°F (about 95°C) oven for 8–10 minutes so the Nutella becomes warm and gooey and the wrapper stays crisp. They’re small but addictive — you’ll fall in love with these little gems.

Can you bake these instead of frying them?

Yes. Baking is a lower-fat alternative, though the texture will be different — less deep-fried crisp and more gently toasted. Try brushing the wontons lightly with oil or melted butter and bake on a lined sheet at 400°F (200°C) for about 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden. They’ll still be tasty thanks to the Nutella.

Ways to vary Nutella Wontons

Customize the filling: add chopped hazelnuts for crunch, thin banana slices, small marshmallows, or chopped fresh strawberries. Strawberries and Nutella pair especially well if you want a fruity contrast.

How to make Nutella Wontons:

1. Lay half (20) of the wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Spoon about a heaping teaspoon of Nutella into the center of each wrapper, distributing it evenly.
2. In a small bowl, beat the egg with a fork and add the cold water, mixing well.
3. Use a small pastry brush or your finger to apply the egg wash to the edges of each filled wrapper. Discard any leftover egg wash.
4. Top each filled wrapper with the remaining wrappers and pinch the edges to seal tightly so the Nutella won’t leak during frying.

5. Add vegetable oil to a large pot to a depth of about 2 inches and heat over medium-high until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
6. Carefully add a few filled wontons to the hot oil with a slotted spoon. Fry until golden brown on each side, about 1 minute per side. Drain on paper towels or a cooling rack.
7. Repeat until all wontons are fried.
8. Sift powdered sugar over the fried wontons for a light dusting.
9. Warm the raspberry jam in a small microwave-safe bowl for about 30 seconds, stir until smooth, and allow to cool slightly. Serve as a dipping sauce.
